Horse Training

Each year I accept a few horses into my training program, and work with them until the performance milestones are achieved. When the horses are returned to their owners they are dependable, reliable, and calm.  The time required for training depends on your horse and what you want him to achieve.

Why I Choose the Moulton Method

I have been interested in training horses for a long time, but was more often that not, never satisfied with the results I saw.  I have always been very inquisitive about how you teach a horse to perform a certain task you want them to do.  I have tried many different ideas people have suggested; most would result in limited or no success.  On top of that, I was usually very frustrated or worn out and equally was the horse.  I always believed there had to be a way to get into the horse’s mind, not in a magical way like casting a spell but in a manner that would have lasting results.  Being a person who likes team roping, I was always told “that you could rope on a three-legged Zebra, as long as you could go to the pay window,” bottomline is RESULTS.

I began to try to place myself in the horse’s position, I would not be a candidate for pain, the rougher some got with me the more I would resist, and I would not be a candidate for “micro management.”  I knew the results that I wanted, but I did not know ho to get them.

In October 2006, my path crosses with Dale Moulton, who has become one of my dearest and closest friends, even though he still calls me his “mate.”

Studying with Dale, I have learned that using the Moulton Method of training, you eliminate pain, eliminate micro-management, eliminate your emotions from the equation, add proper nutrition, equipment and determination, and you get RESULTS.

For the first time in my life, I have actually trained horses that are a pleasure to ride and be around.  Best of all, the horses want to be around you!  As my training progresses, I can see the horses are eager to learn.

It is truly a humbling experience when I’m training a horse and the horses respond so well it makes me shout “Thank You, Lord,” to know and feel both me and horses are relaxed and having a very pleasurable experience.

David Gray

Comments from: Dale Moulton, Horse Trainer

"This is David Gray riding Mack, and it’s Mack’s first week being ridden. He is already soft and effortless to handle. There is no anxiety, and no problems. Mac stops as soon as Gray stops riding, turns when he thinks of turning, and backs with leg cues alone. This is Mack’s fifth time with Gray on his back, yet Mack is behaving like a seasoned ranch horse. WHY?

Mack does not know what spurs are, has never seen a bit, and yet he is so compliant he could be ridden by a child already. How is it possible?

Mack has no issues with humans, they do not represent any negative or painful outcomes. Mack is receptive, attentive, focused, placid and serene.  Mack’s paces are already feeling rhythmic, and he is on the way to becoming a fortunate persons pride and joy.

There are no miracles, but the technology Gray uses every day is the product of forty years of asking the question “what makes horses do what they do?”  Gray has been an incredible student of my techniques and is mastering the art of producing horses different to most others in the country. All the horses he works with become stamped with the same character traits Mack has shown.  His horses are trained to link pleasure to learning, what a concept!

Perhaps it’s time you thought of your own happiness and joy. You can experience all the pleasure owning a horse just like Mac brings.  What price do you put on years of enjoyable horsemanship with a calmly obedient equine partner willing to learn with you? Many people search for years and never find the horse they desire. Gray may have your next wonderful horse waiting for you right now!

Modesty prohibits Gray from telling you just how good he is, but I don’t have a problem endorsing his excellence and commitment to quality horsemanship."
